upgrade comp speed

Postby Wolfdale » 12 Jan 2006, 21:23

well the title says most allready..

ill post my current setup, and im wondering what my weakest link is (3dmax'05 DAMN... some of the tests are 0.1 fps omfg..)

in random order :

MS-6712 MSI mainbord
AMD 2400+ actual speed ~2030 Mhz
1 GB DDR400 memory
80GB HDD ata 66
160GB HDD ata 66
DVD-RAM - ata 66
DVD-RW - ata 66
GeForce 6800 128DDR AGP 8x 10% overclocked with zalman cooling
5.1 surround soundcard
onboard soundcard (yes i use both cuz im using my comp for DJ-ing)

well thats about it for the main line of components.. im not gonna bother you with additional crap

basically what i wanna improve is speed in fullscreen applications..
this has gotten a LOT better when i trashed out the geforce 4800TI SE and replaced it with the 6800 with custom cooler fit

i think right now, the fact i got a first generation AMD is breaking me up.. not the speed.. just that the cpu is an very fast old one..
like having an 4800TI SE geforce versus a 7200 FX...
the crappy fx card will probably only be slightly faster than the boosted TI SE

but the fact its a next generation makes it stronger at new applications, thus increasing preformance in certain games

i have the feeling its the same situation with my cpu atm..
its a fast oldie..

but if anyone has a better idea, i'd be happy to hear it :)

I would agree with you on that diagnosis Marty, it looks like the processor is letting you down.

If its any help here is my spec with a 3dmark05 score.

Gigabyte GA-K8N8X-9
AMD 64BIT 3500+ (stock speed)
2GB Corsair Value PC3200 (4x512MB)
80GB HDD
200GB HDD
DVDRW
ATI X800XL
Creative Soundblaster Value Sound Card

3dMark05 Score using the demo
5142

I was only getting one FPS on some of the test mainly the high res gun battle and the flying ship.

I know that when i upgraded my processor from a 2400 to a 3500 i noticed a significant improvement.

Hope this helps Marty.

The 2400 will be 2nd or possibly 3rd generation XP (ignoring pre-xp K7s) but your right in assuming that's your failing. It's a great multimedia chip, but 3DMark is not what we'd call a "multimedia benchmark" - it's a gaming benchmark, and you want a gaming chip (new mobo & cpu jobby).

Recomend skt 478 (Celern/P4) unless you have silly cash - then go Athlon 64 X2

The only thing i have to ad is save your cash on the memory and use what you got!!! if you dont do alot of multitasking/grafics you dont need more then 1GB memory you can alos look for a AGP MOBO but PCIX is much better!!! and if you get a GF 6800/7800 GF card you can linkthem l8r as a cheep upgrade

Yup I agree Ai3o, the only reason I have 2GB of memory was so i could run two copies of Star Wars Galaxies at the same time (requires about 800MB per copy) ,

b0fh I would say though that Marty wouldnt even have to upgrade to an X2 chip as they are still quite expensive, my 3500 is retailing around £150 at the moment which isnt bad for the speed increase it gives. if you do that you can always upgrade to another faster chip in the future as they all use the socket 939 motherboards (a good thing about AMD) thats one of the main reasons i steer clear of Pentiums, having to change the motherboard each time a new generation chip comes out.

Marty if you do upgrade to an athlon 64 make sure it is a 939 motherboard and chip as the 754's are the older format.

I'll not point out the new Sckt2 940 chips then (Same as the old 940s but no need for ECC RAM) ;)

The 3500 whilst is a noticable speed increase, isn't worth it for the upgrade cash unless you use it as a stepping stne to a faster chip later on.

Just my opinion though that :)

well i dont have loads of cash to spend no, if i would i would probably buy the powerboosted 4x gpu dell computer lol

im currently looking for an ATHLON 64 3500+ 2.2GHZ IN-A-BOX
socket 939

but can you tell me in what ways this will deliver an impact on my current speed?

from athlon 2400+ to athlon 64 3500+ i guess it should make some difference, but i cant imagine its a great difference.. its just that going 4500+ is gonna be very expensive

so expensive, might even concider a dell for that price.. their systems arent bad at all, and if you spend near a 6-700 euros on cpu and mainbord... for 400 more you can have a very good system at dell

Dells are very good systems we use buy them at work. it would really depend what graphics card you get with the dell as they are all PCI Express now

re-reading the OP i'd also suggest ata133 drives (hard only) or sata1/2 - that will help a LOT with loading times :)
