Upgrading system

Postby Jonus » 25 Mar 2006, 15:36

with my tax returns coming soon, i'm looking to upgrade my comp.
atm it's a amd 64 3200+ S754, on an asus mobo.
2 corsair 512mb xs ram
2 80gig 7200rpm HDs in raid 0
ati 9800xt agp
SB Audigy x2
500w psu

so far it's still handles most games and relitively high settings but i want to do a small upgrade on it so i dont have to do a big one later.

atm i'm looking at keeping the cpu and upgrading the mobo and graphx card

the card
Asus 7900GTX
the mobo
epox dual pci-e

i want to get just get 1 card atm and then wait for next gen to come and buy a second 1 for half the price and run SLI. the card got good reviews from what i was seeing as well as the mobo. the down side is, i'm using a socket 754 so my options are VERY limited on dual pci-e boards. the one i picked out has a prob where it says it's 16x but in reality it's only 8x. from what others were saying this isnt a big prob and upgrading to this card, from what i have wont matter to me. plus, the fact that i'll be getting a second card later and i will be upgrading the cpu/mobo later(maybe mid next year)

i like this setup bc it's cheaper then going all out with new cpu/mobo/ram/gfx and it'll keep me going on new games to come.

if u find better or different my budget is $700 for both mobo and gfx

let me know what u think. i'm open to suggestion
thnx

J

no it's a sockect 754. i plan on keeping the cpu for now and upgrading it later next year. it would just be too much money to go with a new cpu too

and from what i've seen there are only 2 mobo's out that support socket 754 and sli pci-e. both which are made by companies that i really havent heard much of but in my eyes this is a temp setup until next year when i do the other upgrade.
